Napping with Daddy

There are lots of things that I could sit down and blog about right now. But I want to share a series of pictures for now, and I can write blogs later.

With each and every one of our children, I have managed to catch Justin taking a nap with them. Somehow I have managed to keep track of these pictures even after 9 years.

I sure love this guy. He is the best daddy and husband on the planet.  No matter how hard he works all day at work, he is still always willing to do anything I might need or want. He's my favorite!  I am so glad that we get to enjoy the next week with him on vacation!

10 Years

10 years ago I married my best friend. I still believe that there has never been another couple who love each other more than we do. Our story began with a man and a woman neither of whom were looking for love at the time. But we found each other nonetheless, and our lives have been forever changed. Each of us surrendered the decision to marry to our Lord. It was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done, knowing that God could, in fact, say no. But we did so anyway. He said yes, but the effort to seek His will first resulted in a foundation to our marriage which has only strengthened our commitment to one another over the last 10 years.

We have already done so much together. We have each earned college degrees. We made it through medical school. We are currently working through residency. Each of us has lost a parent. We have welcomed 3 wonderful children into our home and are excited for the 4th to arrive this year. We have called 5 apartments and 2 houses home. We have lived in 4 states and visited or traveled through many more. We have cried together, celebrated together, worked together.

And through all of the fun, the trials, the work - you name it - we have both come to the same conclusion to the same question: Would we do it again? The answer is a simple, but unequivocal YES.

Star Spangled Banner

The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

My father did not die directly in the service of our great country. On January 9, 2012 he passed away in his own home with his beloved family around him. But in a greater sense, my dad gave his life for his country. For 31 years he served as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During that time he braved countless situations which might have resulted in his death, capture, or worse. His efforts as a counter-terrorism expert for the FBI resulted in the protection of his great country on numerous occasions. He traveled all over the Arabian peninsula, the former Soviet states, Europe, and the United States.

I recall a time when the phone rang and on the other end was my dad. "Where are you," I asked. His response was that he really shouldn't tell me. I inquired about what he was doing. Again, not something I needed to know. Perhaps he wanted to speak with mom? No, not that either. He simply called to let us know that he was safe, and that he would be home sometime in the next 1-2 weeks. Despite the imminent danger in which he must have repeatedly found himself, I never once heard anything in his voice other than resolute determination to press forward in the defense of his country.

Though he preferred to remain unsung, though he did not die in battle, I will always remember my dad as a national hero, and the one man who taught me what it means to be an American.

The Quality of Mercy

After a heroic battle with Hepatitis C, Paul Algene Clayton II passed away at 2130 Pacific Time on January 9, 2012. He was my father, my cheerleader, my teacher, my confidant, my friend. I can truly say he fought the good fight. Paul is survived by his wife and my saint of a mother, Maureen Benson Clayton, and his six sons, each of whom I consider a great friend: Paul Benson Clayton, Jeffrey Taft Clayton, Shane William Clayton, Justin Benson Clayton (me), Brett Benson Clayton, and Phillip Benson Clayton. The world was a richer place with him in it, and Heaven is now blessed to have him there. I will miss you, but I am so happy and grateful for your release from a tired body, and for your progression to life's next great step.
